About the Role:

 

The City of Farmington, Michigan is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our historic municipal movie theater — a beloved community landmark that showcases films, hosts special events, and serves as a vibrant community space. This role offers a unique opportunity to blend creativity with operational leadership, supporting both daily functions and long-term growth. We are looking for a leader with a passion for cinema and public service, who can bring creative energy, operational expertise, and strong community engagement to this unique position.

 

Marketing & Promotion

·         Oversee all marketing and branding efforts for the theater

·         Design and manage signage, promotional materials, and social media graphics

·         Edit and post videos and images across digital platforms

·         Maintain advertising and promotions and audience engagement

Technology & Facility Oversight

·         Ensure the projection system is functioning properly and coordinate maintenance

·         Troubleshoot or schedule repairs for minor plumbing, HVAC, and electrical issues

·         Oversee cleaning and upkeep of tile, carpet, elevator, and other infrastructure

·         Manage and maintain POS system and the theater’s website

·         Monitor and maintain in-house audio systems (microphones, etc.

Finance & Administration

·         Develop and manage the annual operating budget

·         Review timecards and invoices for accuracy and approval

·         Process payments, billing, and advertising invoices (including pre-movie ads)

·         Analyze and adjust concessions performance and offerings as needed

Staffing & Leadership

·         Hire, train, supervise, and, when necessary, discipline or release staff

·         Create and maintain employee guidelines and onboarding materials

·         Monitor daily staffing needs and work onsite during high-profile events, peak hours, or when short-staffed

·         Foster a culture of excellent customer service and professionalism

Other Responsibilities:

·         Programming & Events

·         Collaborate with the movie booker to select film titles and approve billing reports

·         Schedule and plan regular film programming, classic movie nights, and community-focused events

·         Solicit, book, invoice, and manage private rentals and screenings

·         Coordinate with local schools to provide popcorn for events in exchange for ad placement

·         Provide guided tours of the theater to community groups

·         Schedule outdoor “Out Front” performers during warmer months

Qualifications:

·         2 years of relevant experience in theater management, event planning, hospitality, or public-facing leadership

·         Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and juggle multiple projects

·         Experience with digital media, facility maintenance coordination, and marketing platforms preferred

·         Strong communication and public engagement skills

·         Knowledge of projection systems, AV, and point-of-sale technology a plus
