Construction begins on two new fitness courts in Farmington
Ground has officially been broken in Shiawassee Park for the installation of a new outdoor fitness court, located just south of the tennis courts. A second court is planned for Flanders Park. The Farmington City Council unanimously approved both projects, reinforcing the city’s commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for residents.
This initiative is a result of a partnership between the City of Farmington, Oakland County Parks (OCP), Priority Health and the National Fitness Campaign. The new courts aim to promote outdoor wellness and expand fitness access. The National Fitness Campaign (NFC) is a private entity that works with public bodies to install outdoor “Fitness Courts” in local parks or other public areas to provide places for “free” outdoor exercise.
Funding for the project includes a $200,000 contribution from Oakland County Parks and $90,000 from Priority Health and $182,000 in matching funds from the City of Farmington.
“Providing opportunities for outdoor fitness complements the recreation and play assets we already have and gives families even more reason to enjoy our parks,” said Farmington Mayor Joe LaRussa. I’m grateful to see this vision becoming a reality.”
“Spending time outdoors and staying active has a tremendous impact on both physical and mental health,” said Chris Ward, Oakland County Parks Director. “We are proud to partner with the City of Farmington and the National Fitness Campaign to bring these fitness courts to life. We also appreciate Mayor LaRussa’s leadership and the support from Priority Health.”
This project is part of Oakland County Parks’ ongoing efforts to collaborate with local municipalities to improve parks and recreational experiences for county residents. The National Fitness Campaign, in partnership with Priority Health, continues to support similar wellness infrastructure projects across Michigan.
