Farmington Civic Theater Welcomes New Manager, Filmmaker Clare Cooney

The City of Farmington is proud to announce the hiring of Clare Cooney as the new manager of the historic Farmington Civic Theater. Cooney steps into the role following the retirement of longtime manager Scott Freeman, who served the community through years of dedicated leadership at the beloved City-owned theater.

A native of Beverly Hills, Michigan, and graduate of Groves High School and the University of Notre Dame, Cooney brings a wealth of experience as a filmmaker, actor, and senior film programmer. Her feature directorial debut, Departing Seniors, premiered on Opening Night of the Chicago International Film Festival and went on to screen at international festivals including BFI Flare, FrightFest UK, and Cannes’ Fantastic Pavilion. The film earned national attention with positive reviews from NPR and Dread Central, and reached the Top 10 on iTunes’ Horror and Independent charts.

Her short films Runner, Pick Up, and After (A Love Story) have screened at numerous Academy-qualifying festivals and earned Cooney a “Filmmaker to Watch” designation from the Atlanta Film Festival. She also brings notable acting credits, including roles in Descendent (Rustic Films), 4400 (The CW), Chicago Med (NBC), and Widows (directed by Steve McQueen).

In her new role, Cooney aims to expand the Civic Theater’s programming to include a wider array of independent, art house, and classic films, along with special events that showcase the richness of Michigan’s filmmaking community.

"I’m honored to take the reins at such a cherished institution," said Cooney. "I hope to build on its legacy by creating a welcoming space for film lovers of all kinds — a place where community, art, and great movies come together."

Starting July 1, the theater will launch a new monthly series, “Michigan Movie of the Month,” spotlighting films made in or by Michiganders. The debut screening will feature DISFLUENCY, an award-winning coming-of-age drama by Anna Baumgarten, filmed in Commerce Township.

Future plans include:

  • A week-long celebration of the Farmington Civic Theater’s 85th anniversary, taking place September 20, 2025, featuring classic films and community festivities.
  • Proposed enhancements to the theater experience, including a small bar in the upstairs lobby, expanded museum-style displays, and upgraded luxury seating in the downstairs auditorium.
  • Increased community engagement through original promotional videos and behind-the-scenes content — follow along on Instagram and Facebook for the latest updates - check out the new Jurassic Park promo!!

The City of Farmington is excited about this new chapter for the Civic Theater and welcomes the creative energy and vision Clare Cooney brings to the role.
