Curbside Cart Placement
As a best practice, we recommend that all carts be placed curbside (outside of any fences or gates) on your designated service days before 6 a.m., as the pickup time for your service day may take place between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. For homes with both waste and recycling services, please allow approximately one to two feet of space between each cart. This ensures safe and easy service, while lowering the risk of damage to the carts.
Tip: Make sure there are no bicycles, toys or yard items at the curb on pick-up day. We are not responsible for the loss or damage of personal items. You are responsible for the maintenance and safe use of Waste Management containers. We strongly recommend that you periodically disinfect your container by rinsing it with one ounce of household bleach mixed with one gallon of water.

Effective July 1, 2024, new garbage collection guidelines were implemented:
All residents should be utilizing the new 96-gallon cart distributed in June. The following changes went into effect on July 1:
- All trash must be placed in your cart to receive service. Up to five additional bags may be set outside the trash cart for collection, but no personal trash cans.
- Each household may dispose of two bulk items per week on their designated service day. Mattresses must be either bagged or wrapped in plastic in order to be collected.
According to WM, the following directives should be adhered to for residents refusing to comply:
- Personal trash cans will be tagged with instruction to transition to 96-gallon cart on first offense. Trash still collected.
- Personal trash cans will be tagged with final warning on second offense. Trash still collected.
- Personal trash cans will be tagged with warning. Trash will not be collected on the third offense.
**AFTER 4:00 P.M. ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2024: THERE WILL BE A $25.00 CHARGE TO EXCHANGE ROLLCART TO DIFFERENT SIZE. PAYMENT TO BE MADE DIRECTLY TO WASTE MANAGEMENT (WM)**
Anyone wishing to exchange their current recycling rollcart to a larger size may do so by contacting Waste Management (WM) Customer Experience at 866-797-9018. There is a $25.00 charge due at the time of the request payable over the phone with a credit or debit card.
Additional Rollcart Information:
If you would like an additional container for household garbage at your home, it is an $11.75 monthly fee (regardless of cart size) billed by and paid directly to Waste Management (WM).
Farmington Hills Nine Mile Residents Collection Day Change Effective September 11, 2024:
Notification to 31395, 31625, 31655, 31687, 32225, 32231, 32235, and 32401 Nine Mile Road and 22398 Ruth Street residents:
The municipal boundary of the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills uniquely bisects your street. The two municipalities have come to agreement on route optimization to minimize traffic and provide consistent service by one refuse hauler.
To have the collection route efficiently collected, WM will collect trash and recycling on your street every Wednesday, beginning on September 11th. As a reminder, please place all items at the curb or at the edge of the street before 7 AM on Wednesdays.
WM will deliver new trash and recycling carts prior to September 11th. The Farmington Hills DPW will pick up your GFL trash and recycling carts on Friday, September 13th. Please place the empty trash and recycling carts at the curb by 7 AM on the 13th.

Lark Harbor Residents Collection Day Change Effective August 26, 2024:
As residents are likely aware, the municipal boundary of the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills uniquely bisects your street. The two municipalities have come to agreement on route optimization to minimize traffic and provide consistent service by one refuse hauler.
To have the collection route efficiently collected, effective the week of August 26, 2024, Waste Management will collect trash and recycling on your street every Thursday.
As a reminder, please place all items at the curb or at the edge of the street before 7 AM on Thursdays.

Farmington Boasts One of the State's Highest Recycling Rates
The Farmington area’s recycling authority recently released its 2015 progress report and Farmington gets a gold star. Farmington achieved a 53.14 percent recycling rate for 2015, this is up from 50.8 percent in 2014.
According to Mike Csapo, General Manager of Resource Recovery & Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC), Farmington has one of the highest recycling rates in the state. Last year, Farmington was recognized by The Department of Environmental Quality and Governor’s Recycling Council for excellence in recycling at the Governor’s Recycling Summit.
The metrics report lists Farmington as having recycled 733.9 tons of materials in 2015, and composted 1,501.9 tons of yard waste.
Farmington offers its residence a wide variety of recycling options, providing convenience through curbside pick-up, drop off sites and collection events. To encourage more recycling, the city migrated their smaller box-size recycling bins to 64 gallon bins in 2012 and is now adding a curbside recycling service for clothing and accessories.
“Our recycling rate is likely to increase again this year due to the curbside clothing recycling program that the city is starting this March,” commented Farmington City Manager David M. Murphy.
In November, 2015, the Farmington City Council adopted a resolution to implement a curbside clothing recycling program that was presented by RRRASOC. The program is a free, residential curbside pickup service that will occur on the same day as weekly recycling collection. Additional information will be mailed to households in the next few weeks.
Murphy praises RRRASOC for its constant communication efforts with the community in regards to recycling and its initiative in investigating new programs.
